medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Thanks as always John!
Must get to Mainz sometime - or maybe Erfurt! Has anyone been able to read or guess at the damaged inscription on the book he is holding in a), and why is there a sword through the book in j)? I´ve never seen anything like that before!
Meg

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Boniface (d. 754), whose original name was Wynfreth, was born in Devon. He is sometimes referred to as Boniface of Crediton (Ian Wood's account of him in the _Oxford Dictionary of National Biography_ adds, "apparently without justification"). A largely successful missionary and ecclesiastical organizer in today's Germany and The Netherlands, he was the first archbishop of what became the see of Mainz. In 751 he officiated at the coronation of Pepin the Short. Boniface and a large body of followers were martyred at Dokkum in today's Dongeradeel in Netherlandic Friesland. In accordance with his wishes he was buried at Fulda, in whose cathedral crypt he now reposes:
