The Archives and Records Association (UK & Ireland) is pleased to
confirm our first confirmed keynote speaker for this year's annual
conference in London.
Tina Staples is Global Head of Archives at HSBC. She is at the
forefront of emerging issues affecting archivists and records managers
across the sector, but most notably data and digital preservation. At
conference on 1st September 2016, she will present on: Big Data in a
Connected World: Friend or Foe?
As a planet, we have completed half a century of the Computer Age and
are now facing unprecedented volumes of data. Statistics suggest that
more data was created over the past two years than in the entire
previous history of the human race. It’s thought that 1 trillion
photographs were captured in 2015, with billions of them shared
online. Experts predict that by the end of this decade, 1.7 megabytes
of new information will be created every second, for every human being
on the planet. As a profession, are we even close to keeping pace?
Everyone is a stakeholder in this revolution; from collecting and
preserving a mind-boggling barrage of born-digital records – to
disseminating our data and assets to ever-growing global audiences.
But record-keepers also have the job of managing the upside – the
opportunity to shape a new kind of records culture and archiving - and
the downside – the challenge of preserving and organising the tidal
wave of data, and then making it easily accessible.
This paper will consider how well archive and records professionals
are coping with, and taking advantage of, 21st century technology. And
where might the digital world be taking us in the future…?
The need to network on these issues has never been greater. None of us
can tackle the challenges of the digital data and records revolution
in isolation. Don’t miss your opportunity to feed in to the debate and
absorb ideas and approaches that colleagues bring to the table.
