The University of Birmingham is advertising its "Birmingham Fellows" programme, which aims to give the most promising early career academics a permanent post, with the first 5 years focused on developing research and teaching skills.
The Health Services Management Centre, in the School of Social Policy, together with the Institute of Applied Health Research in the Medical School are hosting one of these Fellows, with a theme of healthcare workforce and leadership. It would be an excellent opportunity for an early career medical sociologist!
"The Health Services Management Centre (HSMC) is one of the leading UK centres for health and social care research and evaluation. A strategic priority for HSMC is to build further our internationally excellent research, particularly in the area of health care workforce and leadership, to ensure that we constantly underpin, challenge and develop our approach to the delivery of our health system leadership activities. The NHS is facing major economic pressures, workforce shortages and a need to work in much more integrated manner, including the development of new professional roles and career paths. To support this, HSMC has plans with colleagues in Medical and Dental Sciences to build a programme of UK and international research into clinicians who move into managerial positions (‘hybrids’), the changing nature of health professions, and addressing the health workforce crisis for the longer term. We therefore wish to recruit a Birmingham Fellow in health leadership and/or human resource management to work alongside Professors Judith Smith and Jayne Parry in undertaking new ground-breaking research into health service and workforce changes as they happen, particularly given that the University runs six undergraduate health profession programmes plus the national graduate management training scheme."
More information on the fellowship scheme and how to apply is available here:

The deadline is Friday 13th May.
