In Medieval times and beyond it used to be de riguer for knights to have a
gentler side. Of course, thugs like Henry V were too busy at war even to
learn their inherited tongue.
Henry VIII wrote a lot of music. From William IV onwards, the English
Monarchy were and are a bunch of Hanoverian dullards who effectively
starved the arts in Britain (particularly England) until the 19th Century,
always preferring to import artists to do the job.
The monarchy in this country still don't put their hand in their pockets
for the arts. For music, the change has been for a Briton to be
Master/Mistress of the Queen's Music.
