Thanks Stephen and Sarah - much appreciated.
We have a few other issues to deal with due to our working environment (Windows 7 with only approved software being installed remotely) but I think we have enough now to make our case. Being a private company, our main aim is the preservation of the material, but who knows....? Maybe in 20 years time there will be a dedicated streaming site for old bank adverts and staff training films!
CheersDoug

Subject: Re: [MCG] AVI or MP4 - any recommendations?
Hi Doug,
Sorry for delayed response. I wouldn't challenge the broad consensus for MP4 container as a good choice for web playback, and I'd second the emphasis on codecs as a critical factor alongside the container choice.
Just two things I thought I'd add.
Playback options:At the BFI we're exploring HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) for our access proxies. You can read about HLS on Wikipedia here:HTTP Live Streaming - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Essentially it's an Apple protocol which enables the encoding of multiple bitrate versions of the content (H264 in MPEG-2 TS), wrapped together with a playlist index file (m3u8), thus letting a client select which bitrate is appropriate for the available bandwidth for optimum playback. It also chunks the TS into small segments, thus enabling efficient progressive download of each segment rather than download of the entire file, or the moov atom index in a standard MP4, to enable playback. It thus offers flash streaming server-like functionality without investment in that infrastructure. It could offer the ability to encode multiple 'quality' versions, and delivering the appropriate version to 3G / 4G / WiFi / Ethernet cllients.
Preservation:Maybe long-term preservation isn't a concern at all for your digitisation project, but if it is, I'd recommend considering one of the recommended open preservation formats over MP4. For example MXF, which is gaining traction as a preservation format:http://www.digitalpreservation.gov/formats/fdd/fdd000013.shtml
Material Exchange Format - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Useful Library of Congress summary here:Preferences in Summary for Moving Image Content
MP4 is among the acceptable formats for compressed video sources, but MXF is preferred.

Good afternoon all.
We're in early discussions to start digitising our film and video library and have been asked to choose the output file format. AVI has been suggested but my personal leaning is to go for MP4 - mainly as I've had issues running AVI files on portable devices/smart TVs.
I've done some reading and it seems to be a case of 'six of one...' and whilst MP4s take up less space, it's really down to personal opinion.
Is this a fair assessment or does one have long - term benefits over the other?
Many thanks

Thanks, Jim! Absolutely up for it. Emily, do get in touch if I could be of any help. It would be lovely to work with you once again;)
Thanks
