Hi All
With a budget of hundreds of pounds, I'd definitely use Wordpress. I'd go to themeforest.com<http://themeforest.com> and buy an off the shelf theme (there are even some design specifically for museums).
http://themeforest.net/tags/museum
Though your not limited to the designs for museums...
Add the Yoast SEO plugin and upgrade it to the paid version :
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/
This will allow you to make your site very search engine friendly, something you couldn't do with WIX which I am told by a friend who used it is virtually invisible to Google.
As a non techie I can manage most things I need to do in Wordpress without help, but if I get stuck, Fiverr.com<http://fiverr.com> has plenty of people willing to bug fix for ?20.
Wordpress offers very professional looking sites for under ?50 and you can easily find support online for a very affordable price.

..is to me an absolute nail in the coffin. Open source stuff like Drupal, Omeka,
WordPress etc all have various routes to get your content in and out

have the option to dump everything out and bring it into system Y if you decide
you hate it 2 years down the line.
We're in danger of heading into "which CMS" territory but again as per Tony's
email, most systems nowadays support custom taxonomies (in human
speak: you can have an "exhibition" or "object" data "type"). In case it's of use,
http://cultureobject.co.uk/ is our (open source) answer to getting object
metadata online using WordPress - but there are lots of others ways for
WordPress and others - and tools like Omeka which is similarly awesome.
There have been a bunch of discussions on this list about the pros and cons
- worth having a look back via the MCG website.
I think that "which CMS" is dangerous, on the other hand being landed with a JOOMLA site that belongs to a voluntary organization, and struggling to bring it to heel, and wishing I could change it, it is worth thinking carefully about what you want to do and what is the best long term solution. (any one got some good metadata plug-ins for Joomla)
Try to make sure you are not locked in, and you have a long term support and continuity plan, even if that means using a system, that may not be the best at content management system for your project, or because it's the best fit for your Museum, but because it is likely to be around for a long time and WordPress skills are likely to be widely available at reasonable cost if, sorry when you have problems, or need support. In other words consider the business objectives as a whole, and not focus on the project specifics...
But.. before thinking about the tech, think about your content and what you
want it to do for you.
Good luck :-)
