Search Results for Statistical Data Compilations and Publications

Finding and using statistical sources is a challenge for most students and
many researchers. Finding government statistical sources are even more of
a befuddlement. Requests for govenment information, let alone statistics,
have dwindled in recent years in live reference situations. Providing a
tool that shows, agency by agency, where government statistics hide in a
group of links to database search results contributes to statistical
literacy and to information literacy for government statistical sources
and the uses for government statistics.

Even though the actual publications found in these searches are not free,
all of the databases used are. Over fifty government agencies of the
United States federal government are now included and this is a work in
progress as is the entire statistics resource guide. United States
government agencie do provide statistical data for other countries.

The results of the just under 20 search result links for each of the
agencies represented are for specific types of content and include my
Google Domain Limited Web searches as part of the group.

Google Domain Limited Web Searches

Many of you probably tell students not to use Google for serious research
as I religiously did until October 2014 when I saw one web address on the
MedLib-L discussion group. I have no idea what the post was about, I just
noticed one web address and as the lesson evolved, I started joining the
students rather than trying to change them in regards to using Google Web
Search as part of my database searching research tool.

On another day at the reference desk, somebody wanted to know how to get
recent decades of Philadelphia Census Tracts and their data online.
Government data questions, being quite rare, I had a bit of a mind freeze.
I could have gone to the online catalog and searched in key word search
philadelphia and census tracts and found a link to a web source. But I
recovered quickly and remembered my new government agency finding tool for
data.

I went to the content section for the Census Bureau

http://tinyurl.com/p7to6qk

I used edit/find to get to the outsourced census section link on the
government agency web page. The guide section for census.

I selected this link

Google Domain Limited Web Search (GOV) for Statistical Content

http://tinyurl.com/nvdhwf6

Which contains this search

("census bureau" OR "bureau of the census" OR "bureau of census") AND
("UNITED STATES" OR US OR "U.S.") AND (statistics OR statistical OR data
OR demography OR demographic OR demographics) AND SITE: GOV

Over 31,000,000 search results of which Google will not show more that
1,000 is useless for most information needs.

I modified this search for my information need, however, by adding the
phrase ["philadelphia census tracts" AND] on the LEFT side of the search.

https://www.google.com/#hl=en&q=%22philadelphia+census+tracts%22+AND+
%28%22census+bureau%22+OR+%22bureau+of+the+census%22+OR+%22bureau+of+
census%22%29+AND+%28%22UNITED+STATES%22+OR+US+OR+%22U.S.%22%29+AND+
%28statistics+OR+statistical+OR+data+OR+demography+OR+demographic+OR
+demographics%29+AND+SITE:+GOV

OR

http://tinyurl.com/zwrfveq

This lead to a very manageable result suggested by Google of 318 results

Returning to "Different Searches have different goals"

Limiting to Images, the original pages often have solid information and
tables, graphs and charts

Limiting to Videos: Here one may find instruction on how to use the data
or explaing what is out there

Books: Detailed discussion of statistical sources from these agencies

Scholar: A way to find out how the data is being used and if there is a
methods section in the found research articles, guidance on how to use the
data in research.

TRIP: Evidence Based Research Sources

PogoFrog: A medical grab bag of sources.

This in a large nutshell is what the government agency section of my
statistics resources research guide can do for its users.
