" You would effectively have to eliminate the foreign aid in order to cover the amount the UK receives in science funding from the EU."
Somewhat surprised that a professional research archaeologist in academia would play so fast and loose with the truth, or more disturbingly be so woefully ignorant of the facts.
" The UK is one of the largest recipients of research funding in the EU. Over the period 2007 – 2013 the UK received €8.8 billion out of a total of €107 billion expenditure on research, development and innovation in EU Member States, associated and third countries. This represents the fourth largest share in the EU. "
Don't let the facts get in the way of your rhetoric.
The EU science research funding based on an average over the 7 years quoted has been approx 15 billion euros (£11.4b) per annum out of which the UK gets around 8% or around £1b.
The UK annual budget for Overseas Aid is £13 billion, alone greater than the total EU annual research budget of £11.4 billion.
In reality that £1b could probably be replaced alone by the monies lost in fraud and corruption in the Overseas Aid budget if you were so minded to campaign, rather than playing the leftie game of moral indignation, even discounting the monies that would also be available by returning our £8-10 billion per annum NET EU budget payment to the exchequer.
Whether or not a British government of any colour would spend the money on all science, or what science is a moot point. Whilst all science is important, they might prefer to focus on funding projects that could potentially grow our manufacturing and employment base, such as the single stage to orbit SABRE rocket engine in development by Reaction Engines. Whatever the choice it will be one we can make in our own interests, and if we don't like it we can turf them out at the next election and elect somebody who might manifest what we want.
As I said you can't have your cake and eat it, you either take the tough decisions for the interests you want to serve, or you sit blathering on blogs day in day out, talking the talk for absolutely no effect.
