I didn’t know James either but I felt I did through his website, which I have used and recommended on numerous occasions over the years.
Does anyone have any plans/ideas for keeping his website going/archived in some form?
Best
John

Very sorry to hear James Atherton passed away. I never met him but his website has been one of the key reference points in relation to L&T and is an example of his generosity in sharing his knowledge and insights with the larger community. My very heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Dear colleagues
This is just to let you know that, James Atherton, a dear colleague and friend to many in the educational development and SoTL community sadly passed away last Friday. James had only recently been diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Some of you will know him from external examining, his NTF work, T & L and SoTL conferences and presentations - or perhaps through the PGCE/Post Compulsory and MALT programmes from the Bedford Campus of De Montfort University. Many will perhaps know him indirectly from using his website on post-compulsory sector teaching and learning - http://www.learningandteaching.info/ For sure, there are a good number of us who have benefited from his scholarly and honest 'take' (as he would put it) on all T & L related topics and issues. For James' take on his own journey, see here: http://www.doceo.co.uk/me.htm
Peter Hadfield, his long-term friend and colleague, couldn't have put it better recently when he wrote:
'I know that we all miss him as a friend, work colleague, outstanding academic, and a kind and generous man.'

Very sad. James was simply inspiring. I first met him at the Bedford campus as I was looking for data for a small project. It is hIs scholarly critical approach that got me to fully engage with teaching and learning, and to see it as my second discipline.
He leaves a significant legacy.

Dear aileen
As Chair of the Association of NTFs and as a long term colleague of James in the SEDA community, I would like to offer condolences to friends, family and colleagues at this very sad time. James was a remarkable educator who always had the interests of students at heart, as well as being a first-rate colleague who contributed positively and with humanity to the higher education learning and teaching community. We will miss James greatly, while remembering him with warm affection.
Best wishes
