Iain,
I am glad to answer this as the instructor who championed this term, though I did not really consider it as distinct from historical archaeology in any especially substantive way. In general, I favored presenting a series of lectures drawn from contemporary archaeology that make the case for an appreciation for material culture across disciplinary boundaries. Few of these students will be archaeologists, but they will probably be humanities and social science students working in areas in which contemporary archaeology, material culture studies methods, and attention to ethnographic insight would hopefully serve their research interests. I am personally fine with calling that historical archaeology, but I think for at least some students archaeology implies distant pasts and a variety of specialized techniques; while I am glad to deconstruct that caricature, I risk not getting that chance if they never enroll in the course in the first place, and I suggested calling it material culture studies.
