Dear All,
I have a curious situation. I have historical non-statutory public inquiry to consider. http://democracy.durham.gov.uk/mgAi.aspx?ID=5786
And http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-13950162
I have guidance on statutory public inquiries, those done under the Inquiries Act 2005 (which is definitely worth a read if you have any interest in public inquiries). http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/information-management/retention-schedule-for-records-inquiries.pdf
What I am trying to understand is the retention periods for records and documents relating to a non-statutory public inquiry. Should they be done on a similar basis (permanent for most and if not permanent no less than CD +7) or do they have a limited retention period as they are non-statutory such as CD+ 6 in line with statute of limitations.
Local government retention guidelines refer to public inquiries but make no distinction, that I can see, between statutory and non-statutory public inquiries.
Any thoughts, experience or comments on the issue would be appreciated.
Thanks
Lawrence
