Thanks Joyce for confirming. How does that work in practice when they have a total time for the exam paper though and they can only have the 50% for the Reading section?
Many Thanks

I'm not actually at work this week, but students are definitely allowed 50 %extra time for the reading section of the GCSE English paper if they are using a manual reader. This doesn't have to be applied for, it is automatically allowed. It is in the terracotta book.

Joyce

I’m with Lorna.
The 50% is exceptional; why would your colleagues assume/think that because they can’t get a reader in the reading section that this would entitle them to extra-extra time?!

Thanks Lorna, this is the way I would like to do it ideally and always have done but it is being questioned this year by colleagues in Student Services.
Many Thanks

Hi Rachel
We only allow 25% extra time with a Reader if that’s their normal way of working and we don’t vary the level of extra time for the reading section as my understanding was that 50% was only allowed in exceptional circumstances.

Subject: GCSE English
Hi All,
Hope you’re enjoying the Easter Break. I need some advice regarding GCSE English and readers please, specifically the AQA English ENG1 paper. We have students who need a reader, so they can have 50% extra time in the reading section but the use of a reader and 25% in the writing section. The paper as a whole is 2hr 15, so how do other centres manage the 50% and 25% extra time thing? I can’t see the wood for the trees! ☺
Many Thanks
Rachel
