Hi Veronica
At the British Library we assign each oral history collection a separate collection (or 'C' number) and then assign a second number to each interview within that collection.
For example:-
C1534- OH interviews with British Library staff
C1534/01 Interview with J Robinson
C1534/02 Interview with S Price
C1534/03 Interview with P King
etc etc
If say we have 2 audio cassette tapes for the interview with C1534/01 John Robinson, then we would label them as follows:-
C1534/01/01 - cassette 1
C1534/01/02 - cassette 2
Digital file naming is of course a little more complicated but we label all digital files using the following template:-
021A-XC1534X0001X0001M0.wav
021 - Oral history
A - audio recording (use T for transcript or I for images
C1534 - collection number, e.g Oral history interviews with BL staff
0001 - interviewee 1 - e.g J Robinson
0001 - track number 1
M0 - master file (could be A0 for an access file)
.wav - audio format
The X's are used to differentiate between collection number, interview number and track number.
If you would like further details of this please let me know and I'll send you the Library's guidelines for archiving oral history recordings.
The Oral History Society run the 'Archival management of oral history collections' training course, in conjunction with the ARA and British Library. This course provides advice on preservation of different audio formats, copyright and ethics and cataloguing oral history collections. If you're interested in the course, more info can be found here http://ohs.org.uk/training
Best wishes
Emily
