Research associate (Statistician)
Salary range: £28,982-£37,768
This post offers an enthusiastic individual the opportunity to join one of the leading stroke research groups in the UK (Hugh Markus, Professor of Stroke Medicine) and work collaboratively with the MRC Biostatistics Unit (Dr James Wason) to develop new methodology for clinical trials in cerebral small vessel disease. Cerebral small vessel disease accounts for 20% of all strokes and is the major cause of vascular dementia, as well as being an important cause of lesser degrees of age related cognitive decline.
This project will involve applying advanced statistical methods to determine whether combinations of Magnetic Resonance Imaging markers are useful as surrogate markers to assess new drug treatments. These techniques will vary from simple composite score methods to using multi-dimensional modelling and will also involve evaluation of network analysis datasets derived from the diffusion tensor imaging. We are fortunate to have unique imaging datasets to evaluate these methods. Although the post is funded from this project it is likely there will be time to work on other datasets including stroke RCTs, epidemiological datasets and statistical genetic datasets
The Statistician will be based within the Stroke Research Group but will work very closely with the MRC Biostatistics Unit and James Wason. The two units are located close to each other. The post-holder will have the opportunity to take advantage of all the training opportunities (seminars etc) in the MRC Biostatistics Unit.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
