Chancellor’s Fellow in the Mathematics of Data Science or Industrial Mathematics
School of Mathematics, University of Edinburgh
Closing date: 25th April 2016
The School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh is seeking highly talented academics who will contribute to our continued achievement of excellence in research.
Candidates will have an existing track record of high-quality research in the area of mathematical sciences. For data science this will primarily be in statistics, mathematics or operational research. The School of Mathematics is a partner in the Alan Turing Institute, a major UK initiative that will drive research and investment in the discipline. The successful candidate will be expected to have significant involvement with the Institute. For industrial mathematics there will be additional established links and experience of successful collaborative work in an industrial or business environment with a strong desire for furthering this engagement.
This tenure-track Fellowship is held for 5 years. Subject to satisfactory review at the end of year 3, the Fellow will then move to a standard University academic open-ended contract. It is anticipated that most appointees will be successful in obtaining an open-ended contract. The first year of the Fellowship will focus on establishing the Fellow’s research programme, with a limited amount of teaching and other duties. Start-up research funds will be available and the Fellow will be mentored towards gaining external competitive grant support.
Chancellor’s Fellows will show evidence of independent research at the forefront of their field. Successful applicants will normally be appointed as Lecturer (Grade UE08) having completed their PhD and acquired equivalent relevant postdoctoral experience. Exceptionally, an appointment at Reader (Grade UE09) may be made for someone with extensive experience of research leadership.
