We invite applications for a PhD studentship funded by the Institute of Applied Health Sciences at the University of Aberdeen. The deadline for application is Friday 25th March 2016. Applicants should contact the lead supervisor Professor Marion Campbell ([log in to unmask] ) the discuss the project in advance of submitting an application.
Brief description of the proposed project:
This PhD project, led by a team of experienced supervisors, will investigate how best to optimise the use of robotic surgical systems. Robotic surgery was developed to help surgeons achieve greater precision and control when operating. Surgical robots are, however, very expensive - each robot costs over £1.5m and the running costs are also very high. To offset these costs, previous research has shown that each surgical robot should be used for a minimum of 150 surgical procedures every year. It is not, however, clear how best this throughput should be managed - which surgical procedures should be prioritised, how many of each should be carried out, etc. It is also not clear what extra information patients and public may need when undergoing robotic surgery rather than traditional surgery. This mixed-methods PhD will directly address these unknowns. The student will analyse quantitative data on different surgical procedures from national datasets and data from previous research studies. The student will also undertake interviews and focus groups with surgeons, managers, patients and the public. Results will be of direct relevance to National Health Services (NHS) managers seeking to optimise the organisation of robotic surgery services and to patients and public.
