Hi all,
Sorry to be a bit late to the thread, but I'm starting a new little company, which may be of interest, called Museum in a Box. Sorry this sounds like a bit of an ad, but, well... you have to tell people somehow.
So, Museum in a Box. Not a new idea, but, we're hopefully improving on it a bit. Imagine a class studying Egypt... they can come to our site and order a set of objects that spans the collections of the British Museum, Louvre, the Met. We send a set of replica 3D prints to the class in a box. The fun part is that the box also contains a "brain" or small computer that knows which objects it has, and can tell the students more about them.
Part of our discovery stage is talking directly with institutions who are interested to learn about 3D digitisation. We're also able to offer training sessions to teach you how to create your own 3D models. That's a win-win for us, because we also hope to make whatever you learn how to scan available in the Museum in a Box ecosystem.
We're also hoping to meet with learning/outreach folks to talk over the idea and see if/how it could serve your needs.
There's a bit of early thinking online here:
http://thesmallmuseum.org/museum-in-a-box/
And a rough V1 website here:

We should possibly be being stealthy about the idea, but, well, that's no fun and won't help spread the word!
Peter, we'd be happy to talk with you about scanning your object. Do let me know. And, if none of that sounds interesting, we're also working with the University of Lancaster, and they've got a fabulous engineering department that's doing good 3D things. (I could put you in touch, if you like.)
Yours,
George
