Dear Colleagues
X-posting apologies.
I thought I'd just let colleagues know about this year's Fest Film
Festival in Espinho, Portugal.
It provides students and others with a fantastic opportunity to attend
some workshops organised by film professionals and others, as well as
to develop networks with other young filmmakers from around Europe and
further afield.

If this reads like an advert, apologies. I've taken groups to Fest for
three years now, and it has been a tremendous success each time and at
a very good price. I just thought I'd share some information with you
about it therefore.
The festival runs from 20-27 June 2016.
Attending the festival costs different amounts, depending on where one
wishes to stay, but all festival passes include:-
- Good accommodation at a venue in the heart of Espinho.
- Access to all of the films screened as part of Fest.
- Entry to all Training Ground sessions.
About Training Ground:
Training Ground involves a week of masterclasses and workshops by
leading figures in the film industry. Speakers for 2016 already
include:
Gareth Wiley (producer, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Match Point)
Paul Miller (producer, Lone Star, Snow Angels)
Scandar Copti (director, Ajami)
Gonçalo Galvão Telles (director, A Suspeita, Gelo)
Guillermo García Ramos (director, From Kuleshov to Berlanga)
With more to come - of the sort listed below, in that previous
editions have included workshops by:-
Colin Arthur (special effects artist, 2001: A Space Odyssey)
Christian Berger (cinematographer, The Piano Teacher, The White Ribbon)
William Brookfield (screenwriter, Kidnapping Mr Heineken)
Eugenio Caballero (production designer, Pan’s Labyrinth)
Chris Dickens (editor, Slumdog Millionaire, Shaun of the Dead)
Michael Katz (producer, Caché, Amour, The White Ribbon, The Piano Teacher)
Melissa Leo (Oscar-winning actress, The Fighter)
David Macmillan (Oscar-winning sound designer, Indiana Jones and the
Temple of Doom, Natural Born Killers)
Teresa Palmer (actress, Point Break, Triple 9)
Larry Smith (cinematographer, Eyes Wide Shut, Only God Forgives)
Fernando Trueba (director, Belle Epoque)
Mark Webber (director, The End of Love, The Ever After)
and more.
Those who attend are also welcome to watch the Pitching Forum in
action - in which students can pick up important tips for pitching
their own work to producers.
In addition, if a group of students go as a group from a specific
institution, they will get a 45-minute showcase of their own work as
part of the festival (this year with prizes).
Set on the coast, Fest also gives opportunities for those who go to
spend time on Espinho's extensive beaches, while the festival of
course also involves parties and good weather.
And this year there will also be a Guerrilla Filmmaking workshop run
by, ahem, me.
Finally, so that you know, Espinho is about 20km (and a 3 euro train
ride) south of Porto. Ryanair runs regular flights, and most things
food and drink-wise are very reasonably priced (for someone from the
UK).
So forgive the sales pitch, but my experience tells me this one is a
good deal - hence I thought I'd share it.
With best wishes
William
