I think the problem with the "composite" extension is discussed at http://strucbio.biologie.uni-konstanz.de/ccp4wiki/index.php/Stereo#Linux
I use the ElRepo kmod-nvidia RPM on CentOS7 and Stereo works like a charm in mate and KDE.
