The Statistics and Probability group at Durham University is offering a PhD position, starting October 1, 2016, for a duration of 3.5 years.
Topic: Reproducibility of Tests (in collaboration with AstraZeneca)
During the development of new medicines, many statistical tests are used to support decisions. Statistical analysis of the reproducibility of such test results is important: would a repeat of the experiment lead to the same test result and decision? The successful candidate will study the reproducibility of tests at AstraZeneca, investigate the effectiveness of methodology recently developed at Durham, and go on to develop new methodology to address the problem.
The student will be based in Durham, and will also spend significant periods at AstraZeneca in Cambridge. The primary supervisor at Durham will be Prof Frank Coolen; at AstraZeneca, the student will work with members of the Quantitative Biology group, led by Dr Claus Bendtsen. Further information about the project can be obtained from Prof Frank Coolen ([log in to unmask]).
Postgraduate students at Durham University are part of a stimulating and research-focused environment, as exemplified by postgraduate seminar series, conferences, and an extensive network of collaborations with other Departments. Students have access to high-quality postgraduate training through our membership of APTS (Academy for PhD Training in Statistics), as well as through in-house courses and training events, often organized jointly with other universities.
The successful candidate will have at least a 2:1 degree in Statistics, Mathematics, or a related subject with a strong quantitative component. UK students, and EU students who have been resident in the UK for the last three years, are eligible for full (tuition and stipend) funding at normal Research Council level. Other EU students are eligible for tuition only.
Initial applications please by March 31, 2016, including a cover letter and CV, by e-mail to Dr Ian Jermyn ([log in to unmask]). Informal prior enquiries are welcome.
