An experienced consultant archivist is sought to carry out a survey of archive materials currently held at Contact.
Contact has received £25,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), thanks to money raised by National Lottery players, for an exciting new research project, ‘Making Contact’ in partnership with The University of Manchester's John Rylands Library. The project will unearth and chronicle the Theatre’s heritage both in the evolution of the physical building and the people, inspiring stories and personal journeys that make up its history.
Contact is a national contemporary arts organisation that places young people’s decision making and leadership at the heart of everything. The idea for ‘Making Contact’ came from a group of young people involved in consultation for Contact’s current capital development plans to transform the building for the next generation of audiences, artists and young people. The group wanted a resource to understand how people make the leap into successful creative careers from a starting point without experience or contacts. The project will allow them to uncover first-hand the stories of Contact’s alumni as a point of inspiration for their own futures.
A group of young volunteers will work with a Consultant archivist and Oral History specialist to investigate existing archives, develop research skills, record interviews, archive materials and share their findings. ‘Making Contact’ will culminate in a short film to be used for advocacy and a digitally hosted public ‘living archive’ of Contact’s history.
Currently the Contact archive consists of HR records, financial records, theatre programmes and posters, digital material and tape recordings. We need to know what exactly is in there and what we could potentially dispose of. At the end of the project both Contact and John Rylands Library will have an understanding of the scope archive and what is required to preserve and share it further in the future.
A budget of up to £3000 (including VAT) has been allocated for this element of the work. We envisage this to work out as 12 days @ £250 per day.
