The National Army Museum is developing its Institutional Archive, and there are opportunities for skills to be gained in cataloguing to professional standards, preservation of archive material, and simple records management tasks.
Role Description:
Purpose
• To assist the Records Officer with a project to provide access to NAM’s institutional archive.
• To offer volunteers a unique opportunity to play a key role while gaining experience working with a national museum collection of historic importance.
Responsible to: Records Officer
Times/Dates: One day a week, 9.30am – 3.30pm for 3 months. One placement available.
Location: National Army Museum, Stevenage, Hertfordshire
Tasks
• Cataloguing to recognised archival standards of discrete parts of NAM’s institutional archive collection.
• Repackaging and preservation tasks to recognised archival standards.
• Assistance with records management tasks.
• Support of promotional activities.
• Audit and stocktaking tasks.
Skills
Essential:
• Good standard of written and spoken English.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Methodical approach and very good attention to detail.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Good ICT skills (word-processing, database and spreadsheet applications).
• Must be able to lift up to 6kg.
Desirable:
• A basic understanding of the importance of record keeping and archives, and the work of a museum.
• Interest in British military history.
Support and Training
• Full in-house training will be provided, including site induction, Health & Safety, Equality & Diversity, task specific training, and training in computer applications as required.
• Basic introduction to archives and records management skills relevant to the tasks.
• Volunteers’ Handbook and regular feedback meetings.
