THE DIRECTOR OF THE MAISON FRANÇAISE D’OXFORD (UMIFRE 11, USR 3129)

The Institute of Human and Social Sciences (INSHS) of the CNRS is launching a
campaign for the recruitment of the Director of the Maison Française d’Oxford, a
French academic research and cultural centre in the United Kingdom (UMIFRE 11,
USR 3129).

Start date: 1st September 2016

The position is for an academic or a full-time researcher coming from the European
Union and working in a research institution or a university. Applicants should have
the rank of Professor or Research Director, and should be internationally recognised.
The applicant, working either in human and social sciences or in other sciences,
should give evidence of an interdisciplinary approach in his or her field of research.
The applicant should have experience at the head of a scientific research unit or in
leading national or international research programmes. Skills in the field of Franco-
British academic and cultural co-operation are required.

Short definition of the post

To lead, develop and manage - within the context of a Unité Mixte de Recherche à
l’Étranger (UMIFRE) - Franco-British academic collaboration on programmes with
the University of Oxford, the CNRS and the Science and Technology Service (SST)
of the French Embassy in London; and to develop cultural co-operation with the
Institut Français du Royaume-Uni (IFRU).

The post is for two years initially, with the possibility of renewing this once.

Core activities

1. Academic activities
Priorities
-To plan the academic policies of the centre in an interdisciplinary perspective
focussing on research projects and events (conferences, study days) bringing together
human sciences and other sciences.
-To integrate the programmes and activities of the MFO into the research programmes
of Oxford University, in conjunction with the CNRS, the SST and the MFO’s Oxford
Committee, which meets once a term under the presidency of a Pro-Vice-Chancellor
of the University of Oxford.
-To develop European research programmes and ANR funded programmes which
include British partners.
-To develop links and projects in priority with the two COMUE partners, Sorbonne-
Paris-Cité (SPC) and Sorbonne-Université (SU).
Other tasks
-To manage the roughly one hundred events organised during the academic year.
-To develop the integration of the MFO’s residents (graduate students) into Oxford
University.

2. Cultural activities
-To programme French cultural policy in Oxford, in conjunction with the Institut
Français du Royaume-Uni (IFRU), with the French Ambassador and the Cultural
Counsellor (COCAC) in London being the main contacts for this.
-To oversee the running of the library: the recruitment of interns and development of
projects with the Alliance Française d’Oxford and the Petit Club (École FLAM).
-To elaborate communication tools in conjunction with the webmaster and the
researchers.

3. Financial Management and Management of Human Resources
-Financial and accounts management: overseeing expenditure and receipts
a/as ordonnateur of an institution with financial autonomy (EAF), in collaboration
with the Accounts Agency of the French Embassy (drafting the annual budget, biannual
updates, introduction of the COFI, etc.)
b/as the manager of the annual grant from the CNRS.
-Human resources: co-ordinator of the administrative team; streamlining tasks;
reorganisation of the caretaking of the buildings and stabilising the webmaster’s
position.
-Fundraising: to set up a charity and develop fundraising in collaboration with the
University of Oxford and the French Embassy (IFRU, SST).

4. Property Management
-Supervising the maintenance of the buildings: continuation of renovation work and
prioritizing investments in collaboration with the French Embassy.

5. Other tasks
-To write Memorandum for the attention of the tutelles (governing bodies), to keep
them updated with latest developments
-To write the bi-annual report which takes stock of the MFO’s activities and is
presented once every two years to the MFO’s Comité directeur
Abilities
-To lead a research team and an administrative team in a foreign country
-To have a sense of negotiation and autonomy
-To have an interest in financial and accounts management
-To be able to work as part of a team
-To negotiate, to share and to make people adhere to projects
-To communicate easily
-To analyse, to evaluate, to suggest changes
Knowledge
-Interdisciplinarity within human and social sciences and/or with other sciences
-Knowledge of the French Higher Education system and research organisations in
France
-Knowledge of the research funding systems in France, Great Britain and Europe
-Knowledge of the academic framework in Oxford and the UK, at university level
-Knowledge of the elementary rules of the French public accounting system
-A high level of spoken and written English
Personal qualities
-To be able to organise and lead academic research activities
-Availability for administrative management and high level of personal commitment
-Sense of responsibility and a decision-making character
-Ability to motivate a team of researchers and administrative staff coming from
different backgrounds
-Ability to develop synergies both within the MFO team and with colleagues from
Oxford University and other institutions
Practicalities
-Obligation to live in Oxford on a permanent basis
-Specific constraints linked to working in a foreign country
-High availability required

Key features in the medium term

The opening up of an academic unit (USR 3129, UMIFRE 11) to a policy of
interdisciplinarity between human sciences and other sciences, via scientific cooperation
with Oxford University, and in line with the national strategy of the CNRS,
and the UK strategy of the Service Science et Technologie (SST)
Application files – in French and in English - should be composed of:-
-An introductory letter
-A curriculum vitæ
-A project for the institutional development of the MFO, of no more than 5 pages
(16000 characters with spaces)
-Two reference letters from internationally renowned academics.
