Hi Elaine,
While looking at lecture capture, we investigated a web-based product offered by Koemei. We had a conference call with them, and they were very helpful - they offer 2 hours free transcription as a test.
Unfortunately, the recording we ran through the software had too much technical terminology, and the result was pretty nonsensical. We were looking for something completely automated, and this would almost certainly need human intervention for quality checking. Koemei's product doesn't need to be "trained" for a particular speaker, but it looks like this technology comes at the cost of accuracy.
Best wishes,
Sam Ingram

Hi Elaine
In the past I have used Subtitle Workshop to add or modify subtitles to videos. It is a freeware and available there: http://subworkshop.sourceforge.net/
Also, this comparison table can be of help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_subtitle_editors
I hope this will help.

Subject: Video transcription and subtitling
Good afternoon,
Can anyone recommend some good software for transcribing or subtitling videos? Or alternatively, a company that can provide this service? This is in regard to putting subtitles / providing transcription for distance learning courses and other on-line materials.
Thanks
Elaine
