Hi Anastasia!

The qualities of the PM you describe are clearly why she was appointed as PM! It's so good to have positive role models too.

Here at DMU our retrospective addition of LCSH (subject headings, for those of you reading who aren't cataloguers!) to bib records actually runs into hundreds of thousands, and we've split them up into smaller blocks to deal with, but we've never celebrated completing any of the small chunks. Hey, I'm off to organise a belated celebratory party!!!

Hello everyone,

Apologies for joining so late. There have been some really interesting comments so far so thank you for those.

Just to introduce myself, I have worked at the BFI library for many years now and have been involved in my fair share of projects. Not all have been of a cataloguing nature but they have had common threads, communication and organisation being the most common.

Like others taking part today I don't have any formal project management training. Common sense and thinking on your feet seems to come into it a lot as no matter how well you plan your project something always comes up to surprise you!

I did take time out at one point to read through all the documentation I could find on project management and have since applied this self-taught knowledge to my projects. I've also been fortunate enough to have been involved in a project which was large enough to require a dedicated project manager. She was absolutely amazing and I have been trying to emulate her example ever since. She did all the things which have been mentioned so far. She had
-	a very good overview of what the project was,
-	who the principal players were that had to be kept happy,
-	who was going to be doing the actual work,
-	what budget was available,
-	what the desired outcome and time limits were.
In terms of personal attributes she was
-	extremely well organised,
-	good at assigning responsibilities,
-	able to communicate well with everyone,
-	good at sharing information and
-	able to get the job done on time and on budget.
She also left us with documentation that is still useful to consult today! The project was the merger with and relocation of a sizeable chunk of another library's stock.

One of the projects I am currently working on is the addition of subject headings to our journal collection. I head a team of two so, like Dunia's project, this may take a while seeing as we have over 5,000 journal titles... However, also like Dunia, I have broken the project down into manageable chunks. We have started with our current titles, so from 5,000 the number is now a more manageable 270. This will be a long-term project! I had at first hoped we could import subject headings via SUNCAT for those titles which are not unique to our collection, but in the end decided that we would best serve our users if we assigned our own headings. We could map our headings to LCSH and others at some point, but that's a future project.

Best,
Anastasia

There's some great information about communicating, about record keeping and some tools over on the JISC website:

Welcome, Anna, and thank you!

I hadn't heard of Trello but I will have a look at it and I will add it to the list of recources to share with everyone after our discussion.

Hi

My name's Anna and I work alongside Lynne at De Montfort University.

From my experience a good project manager does just that, makes sure everything is organised from the start and delegates to other people the majority of the tasks. But they have to have a good overview of the whole project and the tasks involved so they can keep it on track. If people involved (whether directly or just as stakeholders) aren't sure what is happening or what is exactly expected of them then that causes problems.

Lynne's blog post mentioned some useful sounding tools for project management. Has anyone used anything else? Some of us at DMU have started using Trello https://trello.com/ which we find useful for keeping track of tasks and assigning responsibilities as well as sharing information.

Anna
