RARE TV PRODUCTIONS OF GREEK TRAGEDY SHOWING AT NOTTINGHAM LAKESIDE ARTS
This mini-season, originally curated from the BFI archives by Dr Amanda Wrigley and shown at the NFT in 2012, emerges from the ScreenPlays research project (https://screenplaystv.wordpress.com/).
26th February, 7pm: "The Serpent Son: Agamemnon" (BBC 1979): a stellar cast and an extraordinary, fantastical design evoking the alien world of Greek myth
Dir. Bill Hays, starring Diana Rigg, Denis Quilley, Helen Mirren + "Of Mycenae & Men" (BBC 1979), dir. Hugh David, starring Diana Dors, Bob Hoskins, Freddie Jones
3rd March, 2pm (Part 1) & 7pm (Parts 2&3): "Oresteia" (National Theatre/Channel 4 1983): one of the landmark productions of Greek tragedy on the UK stage, captured on film and edited for television by Peter Hall himself.

12th March, 2pm: "Electra" (Associate Re-Diffusion 1962): an extraordinary television event, broadcast in modern Greek without subtitles, and receiving great acclaim from audiences & critics across the country.
Dir. Joan Kemp-Welch, starring Aspasia Papathanasiou. + "Women of Troy" (BBC 1958): the earliest known Greek tragedy broadcast on UK television; seventeen minutes survive. Starring Catherine Lacey & Rosalie Crutchley.
12th March, 7pm: "King Oedipus" (BBC 1972) + "Oedipus Tyrannus" (BBC/OU 1977): two very different productions of Sophocles' masterpiece, one a "Play of the Month" and located in a contemporary setting, the other (second half of the play) presented in wigs & elaborate costumes with a dancing chorus, to communicate aspects of the original form of Greek drama for educational purposes.
