Short Abstract
This panel explores novel theoretical formulations and methods addressing
social relations beyond humans taking into account older anthropological
theorisation combined with ethnographic or anthropological research.
Long Abstract
The lived worlds of people include animals, plants, rocks, spirits, and a
plethora of other beings with which it is necessary to negotiate and
socialize. Anthropology has long faced the challenge of comprehending the
other and the fruitfulness of this pursuit; between its commitment to the
human species and the oceanic overflow of the human condition beyond
species specific barriers. Recent years have seen a significant increase in
studies within anthropology and other disciplines that aim to move beyond
the human and beyond the nature-culture duality. This drive seems to be
aligned with a number of theoretical reformulations: predominantly the
'ontological' and 'material turn', which revealed how even naturalistic
perspectives could not be disentangled from social relations. Similarly,
co-existence, co-habitation and symbiosis have become influential within
theories regarding domestication. These theoretical developments have
advanced our understandings of the lived world in significant ways but at
the same time seem to have forgotten older theoretical debates like those
surrounding totemism and animism. This panel invites participants to
critically engage with recent theoretical trends in anthropology, whilst
being curious about the potentials and theoretical merit of older
anthropological reasoning in the field, exploring methods and insights to
transgress the purported obstacles of phenomenological access in order to
address the worlds of the beings beyond humans and the wider social
relations in which we are involved. Papers that engage with in-depth
ethnographic material are particularly welcome.
