Research Associate in Medical Statistics

ACAD101848 Closing date - 6 March, 2016
 We are seeking a talented Medical Statistician, or Epidemiologist with excellent quantitative skills, to join the MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit within the School of Social and Community Medicine, University of Bristol. The post is full time until 31st March 2018.

The post holder will analyse data from high-quality cohort studies using advanced statistical techniques for longitudinal and/or causal modelling, and write up the results for publication. The exact research to be undertaken could, in consultation with the line manager, be tailored to the specific interests and experience of the successful candidate. 

The successful applicant will have a PhD (or equivalent research experience) in Medical Statistics or a related quantitative discipline and a track record of research, including the application of sophisticated statistical methods, published in high impact journals. 
This post provides a valuable opportunity to gain skills in advanced statistical modelling techniques, including the analysis of complex longitudinal data. Analysis will be carried out using data from a well-characterised cohort: the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Opportunities for continued training and development are available through short courses run by the School and through the University of Bristol’s staff development programme.

Integrative Cancer Epidemiology Post-Doctoral Research x 2 posts

Two exciting new 2-year postdoctoral research positions have been created in the Cancer Research UK (CRUK) funded Integrative Cancer Epidemiology Programme (ICEP) at the University of Bristol. These will enable highly talented individuals to develop their own research projects linked to any aspect of cancer epidemiology, including genetic, molecular or epigenetic epidemiology.

This opportunity offers the chance to begin developing an independent research career in an innovative, multidisciplinary and internationally recognized environment. Applicants will be expected to work with established academic supervisors to apply for externally funded post-doctoral fellowship and other grant funding, ideally within 12-18 months of being in post. Our rich research environment closely linked to the Medical Research Council Integrative Epidemiology Unit (IEU) provides the opportunity to work and collaborate with colleagues and collaborators from a wide range of backgrounds to exploit rapidly developing new technologies in molecular and genetic sciences within case-control and cohort studies in ways that could significantly improve our understanding of causal pathways and biomarkers in cancer and its progression.
CRUK have funded a five-year, £4.1 million major new programme of interdisciplinary research to investigate the molecular epidemiology of cancer. The ICEP aims to reduce the burden of cancer by identifying risk factors, mechanisms and predictive biomarkers that will inform diagnosis and treatment of several different cancers (http://www.bristol.ac.uk/social-community-medicine/projects/icep/). 
As a post-doctoral researcher who has already demonstrated a highly promising aptitude for population-based research, or large-scale molecular data analysis, the post holder will develop their own innovative research project, adding to the existing programme of work, and/or enhancing techniques or methodologies.
