medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Paul
A similar quotation is to be found attributed to Francis in "A Book of
the Praises of Francis by Bernard of Besse" dated 1277-83 by the
editors of the 3 volume "Francis of Assisi:Early Documents", New York,
London & Manila, 2001. The work is in Volume III, pages 25-74. The
quotation is on page 46:
"26 He did not want to be involved with the world through temporal
things. When the Bishop of Assisi told him that to possess nothing in
this world seemed to be a very rough life, he responded: "Lord, if we
had any possessions, we would need to have arms to protect them,
because they cause many disputes and lawsuits. Possessions usually
impede the love of God and neighbour."
Also in the work known generally as "The Anonymous of Perugia", 17
(Francis of Assisi of Assisi, Early Documents Volume II, page 41)
and also in"The Legend of Three Companions, 35, same source, Volume II,
page 89)
