DATABASE SEARCHING TECHNIQUES:

Tools in the Statistics Research Guide for
Finding Data Sources and Manipulating the Data

.

.

I am sure that many scholars and researchers do statistical analyis in
their research or need to find statistical data relevant to the topics
they are researching. My Statistics Research Guide may help some of you
with this research.

.

First of all my United States Government agency section now has entries
for around 40 government agencies, many with involvement or content
important to tourism and its related fields.

.

Statistics Research Guide: United States Federal Agency Section

.

OR

.

For all agencies with content and links about their statistical resources
on their website, this information including links are reproduced. Some
government agencies use Bing for their site search engine, others use a
Google Custom search. Those using Bing may require using this symbol

(|)

in place of the word "OR" in a search statement like

statistics OR statistical OR data

In addition to site search engine results for statistical content on sites
using Google for their site search engine, I included those using Bing in
cases where it was possible to conduct a rational search and also obtain
a persistent link to the search results.

.

More importantly there are around 19 searches for the name of the agency
and the terms for statistics so that one can look at many of the
statistical content or the ways in which statistics have been used from
the agency. It may be interesting to know that each agency provides lots
of statistical sources with lots of uses to which they have been put, but
this does not help with tourism research projects specifically.
Fortunately it is possible to add search terms to the left side of the
search already in place to customize the search to a specific need.

.

Consider this agency entry

FROM Institute of Museum and Library Services
Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)

This is an agency not very relevant to tourism.

Here is a link for a Google Scholar search of its content.

("Institute of Museum and Library Services" OR "IMLS") AND (statistics OR
statistical OR data OR demography OR demographics OR demographic)

About 10,600 results

Now add the phrases heritage tourism or history tourism or cultural
tourism to the search:

("HERITAGE TOURISM" OR "HISTORY TOURISM" OR "CULTURAL TOURISM") AND
("Institute of Museum and Library Services" OR "IMLS") AND (statistics OR
statistical OR data OR demography OR demographics OR demographic)

This search finds 136 results.

Here are some of the titles found.

Now if an "irrelevant" agency can find all of these tourism related
research reports and articles, can one imagine what a relevant agency has
hidden in Google Scholar and the other sources that I queried for this
content. This is a work in progress, additional agencies will be added.

.

The guide also has in the main section a list of databases and each that
can be searched for a complex statement shows the number of statistical
sources found in each database.

.

Handbooks, guides and other books listed in this guide are linked to a
Google Books or Google Scholar search of the title, so the users may find
a preview of the book but will find a group of sources that used that book
title in their publication, so that in depth learning about the subject
content of the book.

.

By the way I also do these kinds of tools (amount of tourism content in
each database, links to searches of book titles in Google Scholar OR
Google Books) in my Tourism Research Guide.

http://guides.temple.edu/tourism-guide

If there is an interest, I will do another post that explains what is
going on with the links throughout the government agency section to
searches in Google Web Search that employ the Site: ----- command in
quite a few of the search links.

.

I hope that this will help some of the excellent scholars who are members
of this list to have an additional technique for finding statistical
sources or for learning ways to use and manipulate statistical data from
government agencies. Keep in mind scholarly articles found in searches of
Google Scholar, Temple Summon Search or one of my SITE: searches are
likely to have a methodology section that could contain tips you need to
work with raw data using software and database tools.

.
