*Anthropology in London Day 2016*
*14 June 2016, 9.30am-6pm*
*UCL Anthropology Department, 14 Taviton Street*
*‘Anthropology and Politics’*
*Call for Papers*
This year’s one day conference focuses on anthropological engagements in
politics. We endeavour to consider the politics of doing anthropology in
the broadest sense of the term. Two different concerns come to mind. First,
the myriad different ways in which political relations have impacted upon
anthropological fieldwork and writing. How have do new funding regimes and
political relations, both in the academy and in the field, facilitate and
impede anthropological work? Are there places we do not go, and are their
taboo topics that are simply too sensitive to write about? Second, the
novel ways in which anthropologists have understood politics, and shaped
political processes. What are the hidden political relations implicit in
seemingly non-political activities such as leopard-hunting in India,
midwifery in Europe, family planning in Nepal, food consumption in Italy,
plastic surgery in Brazil, and debates about climate change in northern
England? There are many examples of successful public engagements by
anthropologists, in the United States for example. Boas’ contribution to
anti-racist movements, Mead’s influence on childrearing, and Nash’s success
in securing land for Native Americans all come to mind. Are there
comparable contemporary British or other examples? We welcome any paper
that explores these issues or related ones, and encourage presenters to
draw connections between these different concerns about politics.
Proposals on these themes are invited from post-fieldwork PhD students and
staff members. Presenters will also be invited to submit electronically a
fieldwork photograph that will be displayed on video during the conference.
Please send submissions to [log in to unmask] with the subject line

give your full name, status (whether post-fieldwork student or staff
member) and affiliation or institution.
