... the link to the blog: https://ageingissues.wordpress.com/2016/01/19/ageing-the-bigger-picture-winners-announced/

... and to the winners: https://www.photocrowd.com/challenges/374-ageing-bigger-picture/winners/

Stunning images from around the globe, but also really interesting what was represented (and how) and what was not, across the entries.

‘Ageing: The Bigger Picture’ - The Winners Announced

over 1200 photos submitted and over 200,000 ratings

A photographic competition organised by the
British Society of Gerontology

The British Society of Gerontology is delighted to announce the winners of their photographic competition to capture the multiple realities of ageing and to stimulate professional and amateur photographers to think about what ageing means across the globe. Over 1200 high quality submissions were received for this exciting collaboration with Photocrowd.

The British Society of Gerontology is a learned society aiming to enhance knowledge about ageing and later life. Through this competition we aimed to stimulate photographers (amateur and professional), and wider members of the public, to think about what ageing means in the world today and how it is represented.

Please read our blog Ageing Issues to see the full story.
The Brief:

Getting older is a complex process, but it’s all too easy to revert to clichés when it comes to representing old age. This challenge was a chance for entrants to show a more nuanced approach to the subject. we wanted to see how entrants captured the multiple realities of ageing:

• The joys of ageing
• The problems people associate with ageing
• Confronting fears about ill health
• The ways people plan / don’t plan for the ageing process
• Ageing as a political problem
• Ageing as a worldwide issue: cultural differences and similarities
• How our current society copes with a large ageing population
• Embracing ageing with a healthy mindset
Judging Panel

Our sincere thanks go to the expert Judging Panel for the competition, representing the media, academic and professional photography and social gerontology:
Caryn Franklin - Former Fashion Editor and Co-editor of i-D Magazine and BBC Broadcaster
Paul Bevan - Lecturer and Photographer, University of the Arts, London
Liam Bailey - Photographer and co-founder of Photocrowd
Professor Julia Twigg – Cultural Gerontologist and Senior member of the BSG
Please forward the outcome of the competition to groups or people you know who might be interested!

About The British Society of Gerontology

Established in 1971, the Society provides a multidisciplinary forum for all those interested in the situations of older people, and in how knowledge about ageing and later life can be enhanced and improved. The Society engages with politicians, civil servants and policy-makers at the centre of power. They work in partnership with organisations including the ILC-UK, Age-UK and the British Council on Ageing to apply the knowledge gained through research and practice to improving quality of life in old age. They’re committed to building capacity in ageing research through support of both emerging researchers in ageing (ERA) and also more established gerontologists.
