Topic of Research: Humanitarianism, chronic conflict and protracted displacement in urban settings
The prospective PhD candidate will take humanitarianism in urban chronic conflict and/or protracted displacement as a starting point. The project will analyse how existing actors have responded to the shift towards more protracted conflict and displacement in an urban context and how that context shapes their current role (explicitly or implicitly) in a chronic crisis and/or protracted displacement in urban settings, as well as engage in discussion on how the changing context will have to transform humanitarian practice. The PhD project may analyse a specific sector (such as shelter, water sanitation, protection) or take a more holistic approach to study how one or more organisations develop and implement their strategies and responses in an urban setting. The project could look at one or two specific sites, but should develop an approach that seeks in depth understanding of the particular setting(s) chosen.
