medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Many thanks for your interesting suggestions and parallels. Another possibility is that the object may have been freestanding with a cross attached to the back of Christ, as in http://chips-ny.com/client/mobia/ee/index.php/exhibitions/passion-in-venice#slideshow3.

Which does not look entirely dissimilar to this image in late 15thC. stained glass in the east wi8ndow of Tattershall church in Lincolnshire:

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture There's a Byzantine icon type of somewhat similar design, called the Extreme Humility that depicts Christ standing in a box that's open at the top. In the cathedral I attend, the icon appears in the alcove above the prothesis table, where the priest prepares the gifts for use in the Eucharist. Given the chalice in this piece, I wonder if it might have been located in an analogous location. Could it have been affixed to a table where the priests prepared the bread and wine before the liturgy proper?

Dear list members,
The Hunt Museum collections, Limerick have amongst their objects a wooden figure of the Man of Sorrows set in a chalice, here is the link to the object: http://www.huntmuseum.com/collection/collection-items/mg-042.aspx, described as produced in south Germany but undated. The figure has small holes at the back suggesting it was attached to something. I would be grateful for any suggestions on the object’s date and possible use. I can email additional images directly if interested.
Thank you for your help,
Malgorzata
