Currently ranked 71st in the Times Global rankings, The College of Humanities at Exeter has both the reputation and the facilities to make it an ideal environment in which to pursue your research project. Film Studies is an exciting and interdisciplinary subject area based within the College and our doctoral candidates are able to draw on a wide range of staff expertise and world class film research resources. Our research and teaching are supported by the Bill Douglas Cinema Museum, the largest library on the moving image in any British University, and the largest film-related archive in the UK outside the British Film Institute Research students play an active part in the College, contributing to our renowned Centre for Interdisciplinary Film Research. In addition, our Film Practice students are co-supervised within a professional world of film creation and instruction in our prestigious partnership with the London Film School.

Film history, theory and aesthetics; Hollywood Cinema; French, Italian, Indian, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, North and West African film; transnational and diasporic cinemas; feminist and postfeminist film and theory; film archives; contemporary film and television; adaptation and intermediality; cinemagoing, audiences, and exhibition; nineteenth-century shows and popular culture; early and silent international cinema; film sound and music; genre studies; modernist, surreal and avant-garde film; cinematic magic realism; acting and performance studies; city films; film philosophy and affect; cognitive studies of film; memory and media; media ecology; war studies; contemporary American film and television; American indie culture; theories of popular culture and taste.

PhD Funding Opportunities in Film at Exeter 2016
• South, West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership AHRC PhD Studentships 2016
The South, West and Wales Consortium, in which Exeter is joined with seven other universities - Aberystwyth, Bath, Bath Spa, Bristol, Cardiff, Reading and Southampton, has been awarded £14.2 million funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to deliver postgraduate supervision, training and skills development. In 2016, it is offering 56 scholarships in subjects including Film. The SWW DTP will allow prospective applicants to collaborate with outside institutions, including international and non-academic partners such as the BBC, the London Metropolitan archives and Guildhall Library, Devon Heritage Service, Northcott Theatre (on the University of Exeter campus), and the National Archives. • College of Humanities PhD Studentships (Home/EU and International) 2016
Exeter’s College of Humanities is offering up to 5 PhD studentships, open to Home/EU students only, for candidates aiming to begin studying in September 2016. Exeter is a centre for world-leading research across the Humanities, with Film ranked 1st in the UK Complete University Guide 2016.
In addition, the College is offering a further 5 PhD studentships open to International students only, also for candidates aiming to begin studying in September 2016.
• University of Exeter / London Film School PhD Studentships in Film by Practice 2016
The College of Humanities is delighted to be able to offer up to 2 studentships to fund PhD study in Film by Practice, as a split site degree with the London Film School. This unique and exciting programme provides students with the best of both worlds - belonging to an internationally recognised University and College with the highest quality research environment, and immersion into the professional world of film creation and instruction offered by the London Film School (LFS). This programme is designed for students wishing to take their filmmaking practice beyond an MA and to integrate their technical and practical skills into a more advanced cultural, aesthetic and critical context.
