Dear Zooarch's,
My colleague, Angel Blanco-Lapaz, and I are contemplating starting a
Microfauna Working Group (MFWG) as part of the ICAZ affiliated working
groups. We'd like to gauge interest in such a group via the Zooarch
listserv, so I would ask any interested listserv members to contact me
directly (off-list) to express your interest. It would also be
helpful if you could mention if you are currently, or would consider
becoming, a ICAZ member.
If you are not interested in participating in a working group but
would be interested in attending a microvertebrate conference at
Universität Tübingen in the fall/winter of 2016, please contact me as
well.
We would also be interested in hearing about any existing societies
focused on facilitating communication and collaboration between
microvertebrate specialists within archaeozoology, or past endeavours
to create such. Below, I've attached a working draft of the proposed
goals and contributions of the MFWG for your consideration.
Microfauna Working Group (MFWG)
The MFWG's goal is to provide a forum for the discussion of issues
related to the study of microvertebrate remains from archaeological
deposits. Its members include archaeozoologists, archaeologists,
zoologist, taphonomists and paleontologists interested in the study of
small mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians and small birds. Group
interests include, but are not limited to, microvertebrates taxonomy,
biostratigraphy, palaeoenvironment, commensalism, taphonomy,
methodology, and animal-human relations in the past. In addition to
regular working group meetings, the first of which will be held at the
Universität Tübingen in 2016, the MFWG will also provide information
about the most recent published literature from this field via a
quarterly electronic newsletter.
Looking forward to hearing from you all,
Sara Rhodes, M.Sc.
