INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE LIFE SCIENCES SYMPOSIUM
The interdisciplinary laboratory: facilitating new forms of ‘knowledge’ in contemporary life sciences
Tuesday 24th November 2015, 9.30am - 4.15pm,
The Tomlinson Centre<http://www.thetomlinsoncentre.co.uk/Pages/home.aspx>
‘Life Sciences’ poses some ‘troubling’ and exciting questions. Scholars from many disciplines are embarking on diverse projects in an attempt to understand how genes, cells, individuals, populations interact with each other and with wider environmental and social contexts. The blurring of boundaries between ‘natural’ and ‘social’ phenomena has important implications for how we conduct research and build knowledge. But how, in practice, do we manage the ‘tangle of diverse and often incompatible disciplines and sub-disciplines, theories, concepts, arguments, bodies of evidence, experimental set-ups…riven with controversies over some rather fundamental issues’ (Rose 2013)?
This symposium will tackle some of these questions through interactive workshops, discussion and debate as part of an ongoing research project.
Keynote speakers include:
• Dr Felicity Callard, Director of Hubbub at Wellcome Collection
• Dr. Alvaro Mata, Director of the Institute of Bioengineering, QMUL
• Mr Sotez Chowdhury, Community Organiser, London Citizens
• Prof. Lucinda Hall, Professor of Molecular Microbiology, QMUL
The symposium is free to attend and includes lunch and refreshments throughout the day. Please visit our webpage here<http://www.blizard.qmul.ac.uk/events/event/38-the-interdisciplinary-laboratory-facilitating-new-forms-of-knowledge-in-contemporary-life-sciences.html> for more information.
