I am keen to provide an interface for them that isn't intimidating and so increase the flow of content to the website. I have created a couple of simple WordPress sites in my personal time and am very impressed by its ease of use.
There are a multitude of applications that will allow posting to a WordPress installation from the desktop. I’m currently playing with this one: http://desk.pm
(many here for other platforms too: http://codex.wordpress.org/Weblog_Client)
So, once you’ve got things set up; creating content for WordPress could be as simple as typing an email and the nervous need never go near the admin in their browser.
If the WordPress back end is still intimidating there are ways to make it simpler, e.g. https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/easy-blogging/ or a code approach: http://code.tutsplus.com/articles/quick-tip-customising-and-simplifying-the-wordpress-admin-for-your-clients--wp-28526
