Study Day: Approaches to Romcom
Saturday 21 November 2015
11:00 – 17:00
NFT3, BFI Southbank
As part of its LOVE Season, The British Film Institute gathers the leading experts on romantic comedy for an event that aims to introduce a public audience to the ways academia has approached this hugely popular genre in recent years.
Speakers include Shelley Cobb, Celestino Deleyto, Rosalind Galt, Alice Guilluy, Hannah Hamad, Tamar Jeffers McDonald, Deborah Jermyn, and Lauren Thompson.
The Day will look at the history and the evolution of the genre (from screwball to Trainwreck), before exploring aspects of "romcom aesthetics", and then tackling thorny political issues around gender, race and consumerism. Overall the day aims to undermine the critical dismissal of the genre, and empower romcom fans who will no doubt comprise the audience. The academic speakers will be encouraged to be upfront about themselves as fans (and announce their own favourite film from the genre), in an attempt to undermine tensions between scholarship and fandom.
