Hi Sarah,
Thanks for raising some interesting questions about dates of subscriptions.
For what it is worth, about fifty percent of the print and IP access
subscriptions Philosophy Now magazine receives from university libraries
are for Jan-Dec and the rest of them start and finish on all sorts of other
dates throughout the year. Of the subscriptions we receive through agencies
such as Ebsco and Prenax, around three quarters are requested to run for
Jan-Dec. Very few indeed run with the academic year, though we would have
absolutely no objection to them doing so.
Occasionally we have quoted a pro-rata price for Philosophy Now magazine
when a serials librarian has specifically asked for one in order to align
their subscription with a particular set of end dates.
Do you think maybe we (and other journal publishers) should offer as
standard in our online shop the option of subscribing for the rest of the
calendar year or the rest of the academic year at a pro-rata price? I
expect our digital editor could work out how to code that. We're very
interested to know what serials librarians want, especially if it is
different from what we are currently offering!
Best wishes
Rick Lewis
