Archivist position

The Niels Bohr Archive (NBA) seeks a full-time archivist, to replace a person taking retirement.

The Niels Bohr Archive NBA is an independent institution under the supervision of the University of Copenhagen. Its holdings include the correspondence and manuscripts of Danish physicist Niels Bohr (1885‒1962), who as head of the Institute of Theoretical Physics in Copenhagen (from 1965 the Niels Bohr Institute) was central in the development of quantum physics as well as the early development of nuclear physics. In addition, NBA holds papers of some of Bohr’s closest colleagues, such as George de Hevesy and Léon Rosenfeld, and much-used photo, sound and film collections. NBA continues to be a crucial resource for historians of modern physics, and its board of directors has recently appointed an international Scientific Advisory Board, which has recommended a substantial expansion of research activities and archival acquisitions, relating in particular to the development of the Niels Bohr Institute and Danish physics in an international perspective after Niels Bohr’s death.

Tasks
The main tasks of the archivist will be to preserve NBA’s existing collections, to arrange the acquisition of new ones and to service researchers interested in the collections. In particular, he or she will oversee the continuing digitization of archival material and its online availability. Upon employment there will be a transition period during which the current director and archivist will familiarize the newly employed archivist with NBA’s current setup. In the longer term, the successful applicant should also be qualified to curate physicists’ more recent “born-digital” collections and make them available to researchers according to international standards.

Qualifications
Applicants are expected to have a degree with emphasis on archival work, as well as professional archival experience and familiarity with ISAD(G) and other standard archival programs and software. An acquaintance with modern physics and its history is an advantage. Proficiency in English is necessary, and reading proficiency in German useful. If not familiar with the Danish language, the new archivist will be expected and supported to acquire professional skills in Danish within two years after employment.

Terms of Employment
The position is permanent and will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) or another relevant agreement.

The appointment is scheduled to start on or about 1 April 2016.
