Fundraising for Archives – Expression of Interest

Fundraising for Archives is a development programme from The National Archives offering training for archivists and archive organisations to help them enhance their skills and capacity and become confident fundraisers. We want to invite you to join a small group of colleagues from the whole sector to receive a tailored programme of training, mentoring and fundraising support.

Fundraising for Archives is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Catalyst programme. The National Archives received a grant of £477,000 and aims to reach 188 archive organisations across the UK. We are working in partnership with The Scottish Council on Archives, Public Records Office for Northern Ireland (PRONI), Museums Archives and Libraries Division Wales (MALD), and the Archives and Records Association (ARA).

What we are offering you is first and foremost a skills development programme. Our vision is to transform fundraising in the archive sector, thereby helping to make the sector sustainable and resilient in the current economic and political environment.

Our trainers will work with you on diagnosing your level of needs and will design a programme to suit you. The trainers will ensure that their materials and delivery is flexible enough to be tailored appropriately for you and your services, and throughout the programme you will be given mentoring and support.

We are planning to run four groups in England, Scotland and Wales from January to June 2016 and welcome expression of interest for each group. We will repeat the programme in 2017.

Training delivery methods
There are 12 training places in each group. Each group member will have an initial diagnosis of needs followed by training in four core subjects:

· Preparing for Fundraising

· Measuring Outcomes, Benchmarking and Evaluation

· Developing a Fundraising Strategy

· Advocacy and Writing a Case for Support

You will also be able to choose two individual training sessions from the following six further topics which will be delivered in 1:1 sessions by our Fundraising for Archives trainers. These are:

· Friends Groups and Volunteers

· Managing Stakeholders

· Legacies and Major Gifts

· Capital Campaigns

· Bid Writing

· Crowdfunding

Timescales for application:

· Deadline for receiving Expressions of Interest for the 2016 rounds is Tuesday 8 December 2015.

· Successful applicants will be notified by 14 December 2015.

Timescales for 2016 programme:

· During January 2016 trainees will meet with our Fundraising for Archives trainers to complete the fundraising diagnostic toolkit and training contract prior to starting the training.

· Training in the four core modules will be delivered in February, March, April and May 2016, in England Scotland and Wales.

· Training in the individual options will be delivered in June and July 2016.

Expected level of commitment

· Authorisation to participate in the training from a senior archive service or organisational manager.

· Attendance at each of the four core training sessions.

· Selection of and participation in the two optional individual training sessions.

· Continued independent learning by completing all assignments set by the Fundraising for Archives trainers.

· Regular meetings with our Fundraising for Archives trainers (either virtually or in person) to discuss progress and to receive additional support with practical implementation of fundraising techniques.

· Participation in the Fundraising for Archives learning community (either virtually or in person).
