Dear Subscribers
I curate a blog that features academic authors talking about the books that
inspire them. This week Deborah James, a professor of anthropology at the
LSE, makes an unusual connection between some classics of English
literature such as Middlemarch and Vanity Fair and her work on debt in
South Africa. She also mentions books like Muriel at Metropolitan by Miriam
Tlali: the first novel written by a black woman to be published (albeit a
full six years after its completion) in South Africa.
