Hi Jack,
I am on the MCG list and I come from a museum background. I have for more then 2 years - been seeking an entry-level/ trainee/ entry role in the museum sector of the UK - (have applied for more then 50 positions...I have lost count)...as I also want to make it my future career path.  I know that there have been Traineeships offered through the Heritage Lottery Fund and I have been keeping an eye out on new openings & have been/ have applied for positions. Since Sept, 2014 I have been involved in various digital based/ social media MicroPasts projects with the British Museum - as a volunteer participant and also (since Jan, 2014) working with the Tyne & Wear archives & museums - in Newcastle upon tyne - working with their photographic collection - digital archives. I do have particular interest in the digital archives area of museum work - in addition to other areas of museum practice. I have also worked as a volunteer at other museums for more then 3 years and involved in conservation of artefacts, displays and so-on, I also do have a Bachelor degree in Arts (Art).
I noted that you work for the Heritage Lottery Fund... in website/ digital....and I know that it is a lot about networking...on who you know...word of mouth...and then vacancies when they are advertised...I know that it is a highly competitive/ sought after sector...to get into...and I also know ...of the gov funding cuts...economic climate...that make things tougher.. I have been building my networks in the UK...over the years...and has been ongoing...I hear often of people whom are already in the sector...in various positions...and is certainly interesting to read on their projects that their doing/ working on...or of coming informative events...but then I am sure they had their own personal journey to get to where they are now...I thought .it would also be useful I am sure for those of us whom have not yet made it into the sector but whom are still plugging on...seeking to get their own foothold ..in the heritage/ museum career path of employment...(however long it takes)....that maybe at some stage...there be discussion on this aswell...and maybe for sure you would have insight to share on this...as others would too...through years of experience...I had been thinking on this for some time and thought I would put it out there...once again... I keep going at it as is my passion...and is in my blood...(as I am sure it is for others too) and so Iv always had the stamina to keep on going...the drive.
Anyway I know networking is so important and necessary....particularly in this sector...communication...interaction with other museum/ heritage folk...and I think it does take a lot of courage..guts to put yourself out there. We all share a valuable course. Regards to you all,
Michael       From: Jack Harris <[log in to unmask]>

Hi Jess,

You might like to chat to the volunteers team at Shakespeare's Globe - they manage about 600 volunteer stewards for performances and events throughout the year.

Two contacts for you:

Lotty Englishby - [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Matt Hatt - [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>

Mention that I passed you on (having recently left the Globe) - I'm sure they'll be happy to let you know what they use.

Best,

Jack

Subject: Volunteers Management Systems

Hi All,

We are thinking about upgrading our volunteers management system - has anyone implemented a good system recently that is open source or off the shelf?

We are currently using a bespoke system built in house that is great but is quite old now and currently needs some investment, so want to explore the possibilities.

Thanks,

Jess
