Hi all,
I am writing to you to let you know about a new working group on cloud
computing which has been established under the Research Councils UK.
Working with National e-Infrastructure Project Directors group, RCUK
have been reviewing cloud computing activities in the academic and
research sector in the UK. Some of you will already be aware of the
report which summarises its findings, 'Cloud Computing for Research
and Innovation':
http://bit.ly/pdgcloud
The creation of the working group follows from the report’s first
recommendation and recognises the need to provide a focal point to
foster greater collaboration and co-ordinations of efforts.
I have been asked by RCUK to chair the working group. This has been
established with an initial membership of five but we expect it to
grow to around twelve members. Amongst the first tasks of the group
has been to define terms of reference for it and its relationship to
the SIG:
* RCUK Cloud Working Group terms of reference: http://bit.ly/1NxG5R4
* Cloud SIG terms of reference: http://bit.ly/1GuQyxi
The RCUK Cloud working group replaces the existing Cloud SIG committee
and will oversee the work of the wider SIG. Martin Hamilton, one of
the members of the working group will be chairing the Cloud SIG.
We have also been working on a programme of events. *The first of
these will be a community building workshop to be held on the 1st
December at Imperial College in London.*
This will include speakers from across the UK research community
representing a range of different applications areas for cloud. We
will be sending more information shortly including arrangements for
booking and details of the full meeting programme.
I hope you will engage with these new initiatives. Cloud is an
exciting, challenging and fast moving technology area and needs the
active participation of the community to ensure we make best use of
its potential.
Best regards,
Phil
