Hello All
We've just finished some updates on a collections website based on feedback and I thought I'd share some thoughts on where this fits in a project plan.
Naturally having the feedback implanted after go live or when the site is in beta has the advantage of a larger pool of users feeding back. The advantage of using usability testing and similar before you go live is you present more of a finished product on launch and theoretically you should get less feedback. The key to either approach is having funds and time allocated to implement what's fed back!
How much of each to allocate is a bit of a crystal ball gazing exercise as in theory if everything is done correctly in the development stage there won't be much to do. Then again if everyone involved can't see the wood from the trees because of being closely involved there may quite a bit to do!
Our recent approach on our World Cultures website was to assign a sum to future development which included implementing feedback. The rationale being if there's not much feedback we'll have funds in place for future development but if there's a lot of feedback we can cover it. And of course keep your developer happy by agreeing an implementation plan. It's much easier than piecemeal work, gives better value for money and you have an agreed deadline.
In this instance we based our plan around the frequently asked items and a review by Rebecca Atkinson in Museums Journal. You can see the result on the website: http://rammworldcultures.org.uk
And, yes, more feedback is still welcome!
