Event description
New forms of interdisciplinary research and changing publishing models and formats present new challenges and opportunities for academic researchers, publishers, and funders. What role does the academic book continue to play, and how is this changing in humanities and science, technology and medicine (STM) publishing? A panel of publishers, researchers, and funders from across STM and humanities research will discuss the issues facing academic book publishers and authors. The panel will address approaches for maintaining and expanding the relevance of the academic book, and explore similarities and differences between the role of the book, the researcher-author, and the book publisher in STM and the humanities.

Speaker bios
Des Fitzgerald, Lecturer in Sociology, Cardiff University Collaborator in Hubbub (the first residency at The Hub at Wellcome Collection).
Des is a social scientist, interested in developments in psychology and neuroscience. He has recently published a co-authored open access book, with Felicity Callard, ‘Rethinking Interdisciplinarity across the Social Sciences and Neurosciences,’ and is co-editor of a new ebook series in Palgrave Macmillan's Pivot format, which attempts to find a middle ground between the journal article and the research monograph, while explicitly reaching across the natural science/social science boundary. He has another research monograph subject to contract at a traditional North American academic publisher, and is a co-editor of the Handbook of Biology and Society, which is due to be published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2016.
Amy Bourke-Waite, Senior Communications Manager at Palgrave Macmillan
Amy works in the communications team for Palgrave Macmillan and Nature Publishing Group, both part of newly formed company Springer Nature, a major new force in scientific, scholarly, professional and educational publishing. Amy has been involved in Palgrave Macmillan’s open access monograph programme from its inception in 2013, and is fascinated by how open access book models are evolving in a challenging market, and how academics’ perceptions of open access are changing over time.
Nisha Doshi, Senior Commissioning Editor, Medical Books, Cambridge University Press
Nisha Doshi is Senior Commissioning Editor for medical books and digital products at Cambridge University Press. Shortlisted for the 2015 Kim Scott Walwyn award, she has worked in academic publishing for 7 years, firstly as Publications Assistant for the open access journal PLOS Medicine and subsequently as Assistant Editor, Editor, Commissioning Editor and Senior Commissioning Editor at Cambridge University Press. With an academic background in archaeology, she is often struck by the differences between STM and humanities book publishing and the sometimes contrasting needs of the communities we serve. She is particularly interested in exploring ways to ensure that books and book publishers continue to remain relevant, meeting the needs of authors and readers and building on the strengths and experience of publishing colleagues across the arts, humanities and sciences, while also recognising the deficiencies of one-size-fits-all solutions.
Cecy Marden, Wellcome Library Open Access Project Manager, Wellcome Trust
Cecy Marden works on the Wellcome Trust’s open access policy, particularly as it applies to monographs and book chapters, and was a member of the HEFCE Monographs and Open Access Expert Reference Group. Prior to joining the Trust, Cecy worked at PLOS and Open Book Publishers. With a background in English and Philosophy she is particularly interested in how open access functions in relation to the humanities, and is looking forward to discussing its intricacies with the authors and publishers on the panel.
Dr Felicity Callard, Reader in Social Science for Medical Humanities, Durham University, and Director of Hubbub (the first residency at The Hub at Wellcome Collection)
Felicity is the Director of Hubbub – the first residency at The Hub at Wellcome Collection – which brings researchers and practitioners from different disciplines and domains of expertise together. As Director of a major interdisciplinary team, Felicity is very attentive to appropriate venues for the outputs of collaborations, and is therefore preoccupied by the changing nature of the academic book and its audiences. With Des Fitzgerald, (above) she is also an author of ‘Rethinking Interdisciplinarity across the Social Sciences and Neurosciences,’ and is also a co-editor of the interdisciplinary series, Neuroscience Intersections.
All the very best for now
