Abstract:
Everyday multilingualism and the changing geopolitics of language: the case of 'Rethink UvA'.
Virginie Mamadouh (University of Amsterdam)
Whereas the (re)production of languages is an everyday practice that is generally strongly regulated by the state, in the past decades, globalization processes (visible through intensified flows of international migration and trade, scientific and cultural exchanges, and global information) have boosted new practices of linguistic diversity. The relation between language(s), territory(ies) and identities is changing in the process.
The lecture illustrates this with a discussion of language issues at the UvA during the recent collective actions of students and staff members. How are languages (especially English and Dutch) deployed in the articulation of a grassroots movement of academics? How does it affect the emerging scaled and placed subjectivities? And how does it impact university politics and national politics regarding education and research?
