It's not that the Victorian compilers of Old English dictionaries were
prudish, Mike - if the word doesn't appear in an original Old English
document it won't get in the dictionary. I've just checked one well-known
four-letter word in the OED. It is first recorded in Middle English in the
13th century - it's assumed to derive from Old English - there are related
words in Old Frisian, Middle Dutch, etc - but the Old English word itself is
'not securely attested'.
