I am researching the early use of sand mould casting in Europe and am having great difficulty to find firm evidence for the use of sand moulds pre-1500. It has been suggested that the first use of sand moulds in Western Europe was to cast pig iron. While there is ample evidence from the ‘medieval’ Islamic world in the form of casting flasks and written sources (Al-Jazari), I have yet to find this kind of evidence from medieval Europe. I was wondering whether any of the subscribers might be able to help me further with information on written sources or archeological evidence in the form of casting flasks or moulding sand pre-1500.
Thanks,
